DSI officially was created in 2007 to create dirt mods and tracks for rFactor, but its origins date further back. Members of what would become DSI started making their first mod in 2006 with the classic SAS model. Mark Ziedler paired the model with physics originating from his work with ORR, and dirt late model racing in rFactor was born.

The mod would soon be given a working name of Dirt Ripper, and several members were brought on board to help develop and test. News of the mod spread throughout the dirt community, and eventually got to the computers of DWR. DWR quickly acquired the group and all of its members and renamed the mod to dirtFactor. With this name change came new models. Adam Zuidema replaced the old SAS model with new models specifically built for rFactor, the first dirt late models designed to be put in rFactor. DWR also brough in their own testers to the group nearly doubling the number of testers and bringing both Nascar Heat and DTR2 racers together to work on a mod that would hopefully finally unite the 2 groups.

The mod up to that point had been developed and tested by ex-Heat drivers and was difficult for DTR2 drivers to adapt too given their experiences and time in DTR2. Opinions greatly differed on what the mod should be. One side wanted hardcore realistic physics, and the other wanted something anyone could jump in and drive. The 2 sides couldnt reach an agreement and split. The original members of the DirtRipper mod who wanted hardcore physics joined together and formed DSI.

DSI worked feverishly to push out new models and textures to produce their own mod. Their hard work from Dirt Ripper to dirtFactor finally culminated into a full blown dirt late model mod for rFactor with Dirt Sim Inc. Phase 1. Given the marketing of dirtFactor and the realitve quickness that DSI Phase 1 was released, it was well received but not well known. The follow up to Phase 1 was released soon after and was an underground hit. The skill required to drive the cars and the time needed to develop setups made it the mod to race for those wanting hardcore physics.

DSI was offered to join SBS Racing and utilize their large number of members, and rankings system that was popular with sprint car drivers. In 2008 DSI joined and became SBS Racing. Under SBS, the first legitimate midwest modified mod was released as SBS Modifieds. Shortly after, Phase 3 of the late models was released and was the most popular dirt mod during that time. SBS saw the most website traffic than before, and its number of members grew rapidly.

With interest dwindling due to new mods being released, donations became scarce, and SBS was forced to shut down its servers and rankings. SBS modding had come to a halt as well, their only release of 2009 was league management utility called GridLock. It took many versions to fix bugs and accommodate as many event formats as possible, but it remains a popular utility used by a lot of dirt racing leagues.

Looking to start fresh, the team known previously as DSI chose to leave SBS and start new under their old mod group with a new dedication to hardcore physics. In 2009, DSI, brought on new team members for the first time in their history. Adding members of Team AMP, brought in talents that DSI lacked previously and doubled their test team. With this new team DSI hopes to improve on their existing products and create new and exciting mods, tracks, and utilities with the motto of Hardcore Reborn.
